Using RSS Feeds
The Internet gives you access to a virtual smorgasbord of
information. From the consequential to the trivial, the astonishing to
the mundane, it is all within your reach. This means you can keep up
with the headlines, policies, trends, and tools that interest your
nonprofit, and keep informed about what people are saying about your
organization online. But the sheer volume of information can pose
challenges, too: namely, how do you separate the useful data from all
the rest? One way is to use RSS, which brings the information you want
to you.

headlines or breaking information the long term uses of RSS are broad.

Twitter for Business
Businesses can use Twitter as a marketing tool in a variety of ways.
Many business owners struggle with social media as a marketing medium.
At the heart of the most effective social media marketing campaigns is
personal communication. Many businesses that try to manage social media
may attempt to shout their message, rather than simply engaging with
potential customers. Potential customers who are active in social
networks will not be receptive to marketing in this fashion. The trick
with social media like Twitter is to interact and engage, rather than
shouting your message.

Video Optimization Part 2
Optimizing your video for search engines will increase the exposure that
the video receives, and optimization will also help spread the video's
message. Follow these steps to enhance your videos and improve their
rankings...
1. Shorter Videos Rank Better
No big surprise here -- the file size of short videos is much smaller
than that of longer videos. On the video networks like YouTube, short
videos are viewed far more often than longer ones. A length of less than
3 minutes per video seems to be ideal, and absolutely make every effort
to keep your video under 10 minutes! If you have a long video segment,
consider breaking it into multiple videos. The more popular videos on
the video networks are given more exposure, which will also help
increase the number of views received.
2. Titles Capture Interest
Just like newspaper headlines, it is important that the title of the
video be one that will attract attention. If possible, include important
keywords in the video title. This will help the video perform well in
video searches for that keyword or phrase. Word order may also make a
difference in the video ranking, so try to use the more important
keywords at or near the beginning of the video title.
Video Optimization - Part 2
Manage Your Reputation Online
A companys reputation is often critical to that company's success. The
anonymity and vastness of the Internet makes managing a reputation much
more difficult than it once was. Businesses must be proactive about
protecting their brands and reputations.

Hallmarks of a Good Podcast
There are many, many things that separate a good podcast from all
the rest. Here are a few to consider...
Recording Quality
The quality of the recording is probably the most critical component of
a podcast. A good podcast is easy to understand, and should be recorded
at a volume level that makes it easy for listeners to hear all that is
said.
Sound Balance
Adding background music polishes a podcast, but be careful that the
music does not overpower the primary content. The background music
should be subtle and not distracting. Create a balance that does not
compromise the quality of the recording. Also, be sure that the music is
not the focal point of a podcast show, unless the topic is about the
music -- the emphasis should be on the primary content, and not on the
musical arrangements.

What Are Sound Effects
A sound effect is a ready-made sound for podcasters or producers.
Typically, podcasters need to only incorporate the sound into their
production for instant success. This can be done with various editors
running in a very short amount of time. Sound Effects make the creation
of a podcast easier and professional. Sound effects are usually easy to
edit and customize using any sound editor, occasionally more
sophisticated sound require precise tuning.
Examples of sound effects can be found at

Twitter vs RSS Feed Readers
There is no question that Twitter and RSS have some things in common.
However, they are not the same, and Twitter will not kill the feed
reader. This is a concept I have seen come up a number of times, and
frankly, I just do not see it happening, at least not without some
dramatic changes in how Twitter is presented to its users.

Where to Locate Sound Effects for Podasts?
Royalty-free sound effect libraries contain thousands of sound effects
that can be licensed for specific uses. A customer who uses royalty-free
sound effects, as opposed to hiring a sound engineer to create them from
scratch, can save considerable time, effort, and money. Typically,
podcasters and other content producers can obtain non-exclusive rights
to a single effect, or they can purchase a subscription of sorts. The
subscriptions allow publishers to download a limited number of sound
effects during a specified period of time.

Emergency Response and RSS
Centrelink will use GPS-enabled phones and RSS feeds to improve its
response to disasters such as the recent Victorian bushfires and
Queensland floods.
The agency played a key role in the recent bushfires and floods as it
distributed more than $100 million worth of government support payments
to victims.
But its resources were under extreme pressure as it responded to a spate
of natural disasters across the country. It now plans to use mobile
phones with Global Positioning System capability to track where staff
are deployed and what skills are available in an area.
This information will be fed back to a command centre in real time and
displayed on a screen.
The department will also use RSS feeds -- which allow a single message
to be sent out to a group of subscribers -- to allocate resources to
different areas to meet changing demand.

What Exactly is Podcasting
For the non-technical folks, podcasting is simply a means of syndicating
and distributing rich-media files via the Internet. The content
contained in a podcast can vary significantly, from a song, to a
educational lecture, to a political debate, to just about anything else.
One great thing about podcasting is the wide variety of content formats
it can contain. And unlike radio or television broadcasts, the recipient
can listen or view at their leisure, choosing for themselves when and
where they wish to listen or view a podcast.

TechCrunch Reports FeedBurner Problems
Complaints about Feedburner, a service that helps websites manage
their RSS feeds, have been around as long as the company itself. But you
would think that when Google spent $100 million to buy the company, they
would get it together.
But things haven’t gotten better. Instead, the service is becoming
unreliable. Feedburner problems plague website owners far more than they
should. And while Google is notoriously slow in absorbing its
acquisitions, it’s far past time for them to get their act together
and turn Feedburner into a grown up service.

RSS to HTML Updated
NotePage, Inc. released a new version of their popular
RSS2HTML script. RSS2HTML is a free PHP script that converts RSS
feeds into HTML web pages. The RSS2HTML script allows webmasters to
easily display RSS feeds on their websites.
The content of the RSS feeds can be easily integrated into an existing
website's theme using the rss2html.php script. The rss2html.php script
parses the RSS feed, extracts the pertinent information, formats it, and
outputs it as regular HTML.
Using RSS2HTML webmasters can customize the format and look of the web
page created from the RSS feed. The content of the RSS feed can be
easily integrated into an existing website's theme. The webpages will
always display the most current information from the RSS feed, and
because the resulting page is pure HTML, it will be in a format friendly
to search engine robots. The RSS2HTML script runs on any webserver that
can run PHP scripts and supports feeds in the RSS 2.0, .93, .92, .91, or
.90 format.

Effective Podcasting Tips
Many people assume that podcasting is all about audio and fail to
acknowledge the writing behind the show. Skilled communicators
understand the type of planning required in order to pull off a clean
final product. The most memorable and effective podcasts are always well
planned. Some of the best podcast shows use a script and follow a
structured format. The preparation that occurs behind the scenes is
similar to what would take place for a radio show.

The Internet Is Influencing Politics
Blogs played a significant role in the 2004 election, but the 2008 race
has seen even newer types of communications play a significant role.
Obama has reached young voters through text messaging and
social-networking sites like Facebook, while incendiary speeches by his
former preacher Rev. Jeremiah Wright were viewed widely on the YouTube
video site.
This was an interesting article that was written a number of months
ago:
The staggering distribution numbers, through channels like iTunes,
YouTube, or podcasting websites, indicate that technology could play a
critical role in the upcoming elections. Technology could be the
deciding factor in the 2008 US Presidential race, and while distribution
has never before been as accessible as it is to todays politicians and
political candidates, politicians have far less control over the news
and media than their counterparts in previous years.
The curious need not look any further than YouTube to find the latest
political constituents being haunted by their own words and dogged by
their past missteps. Todays politicians have far less control of the
news media and messages associated with their candidacy.
The Internet and technology is positioned to play a huge role in
elections. Whether that truly occurs remains to be seen.
Influencing Politics through The Internet
Bloggers At Democratic Convention
The 2008 DNC is expected to be the most blogged-about political
convention in history. That, of course, is just a small segment of the
estimated 15,000 total media in attendance. Nonetheless it is worth
noting.
Google Gets Political
Google will be pampering bloggers and tutoring US policy makers at
Democratic and Republican national conventions as Internet culture
flexes growing political muscle.

Overcoming RSS
I thought this was rather funny but sadly true -- a different kind of
RSS.
A look at a common affliction among domainers.
Thousands of people suffer daily from Repetitive Statistics
Syndrome (RSS). RSS is an obsessive compulsive disorder that
involves checking revenue statistics from programs such as Google
Adsense and domain parking multiple times a day. RSS sufferers know that
checking their statistics repeatedly will not increase the final revenue
number at the end of the day, but they can’t bring themselves to stop
checking stats. This article will discuss RSS and what can be done about
it.
History of RSS. RSS began with early incarnations of public e-mail
services such as AOL and Prodigy. People who were new to e-mail would
check their accounts multiple times each hour to make sure they quickly
knew if one of their friends had forwarded a funny picture of a cat to
them or if they needed to send out a chain letter to 7 people in order
to stave off bad luck. This was called RES for Repetitive Email
Syndrome.

Why Should You Use Web Templates?
Web templates expedite the process of setting up a new website. The idea
behind a web template is that it will save time with the creative design
and layout process.
In the business world, time is money; hence, using templates can save
money. It can be a challenge to find a web designer for hire, and quite
often the designers schedule will not always mesh with the needs of a
small business. Time rarely controls a web graphic designer. Artists
are, well, artistic, and don't necessarily work by the clock. Instead,
they work when inspiration strikes, which can be problematic when there
are deadlines to meet. Templates are ready-made, and can be easily
edited, allowing you to instantly create a website.
In addition, webmasters that may lack adequate graphic or design skills
can quickly and easily create a website themselves, simply by editing
and customizing the existing HTML layout in a web template. And locating
a themed web template takes far less time than attempting to create a
layout and graphics from scratch. Web templates also remove any coding
issues. This is especially helpful to webmasters who are just starting
out and just learning HTML coding.
The bottom line is that webmasters who use web templates will have their
websites up and running much quicker.
Why Should You Use Web Templates?

Government Website Improvements
Government web sites have been a joke for almost as long as there have
been web sites. They tend to be slow, clunky, and far behind their
private-sector counterparts. All three presidential candidates have
signaled that they want the federal government to make better use of the
Internet, but there is a real danger that the next administration will
simply add another coat of lipstick to a very ugly pig.
A new paper from researchers at Princeton University suggests a
different strategy.
The focus should be on providing raw public data such as regulatory

LA Times Gets Web 2.0
Paul Bradshaw is not a psychologist. He just plays one on the Internet.
Calling himself an amateur psychotherapist to the blogerati, the
U.K. blogger has identified common psychological complaints of bloggers
and social media addicts as they adapt to the demands of new
technologies.
Among them:
-- Comment guilt: Feelings of worthlessness and frustration that they
don't comment more frequently on other peoples blogs.
-- Twitter rage: Extreme psychopathic episodes directed at microblogging
service outages (the most acute case currently being studied:
TechCrunchs Mike Arrington)
-- Twitterhoeia: The uncontrollable urge to share mundane experiences
with Twitter followers (Arrington currently taking part in a case study)
-- Six degrees of separation syndrome (also known as Robert Scoble
multiple personality disorder): The delusion that he or she is just one
friend removed from anyone else in the world and compulsively adds
friends on social networks
-- RSS reader Sisyphus complex: No matter how much time is spent
checking RSS reader, there are still 8,978 posts unread.

China Unable to Stop Content Flow

up online, sent by text and instant message across a country shaken by
its worst earthquake in three decades.
Who Owns Content?
PC Mag takes on the
question of who owns content, especially where RSS Feeds are
concerned:
Every day people put virtual truckloads of information into the
public domain. Books are published. Newspapers printed. A lot of that
ends up on the Internet as well, along with the words of bloggers and
other online denizens. All of these people make content public so that
others can hopefully benefit from it.
Once it is out in the public domain, who owns it? Well, the author of
course, or in some cases, their employers. That makes sense when we're
talking about a web Wage. But sometimes, in order to make it easier for
people to find and read the information, it is delivered as an RSS feed.
RSS breaks down the information into article-sized chunks and streams it
out so that news-reading tools can grab it and display it for users.

Avoid Duplicate Content Penalties
While it may still be debatable whether all the major search engines
currently employ a duplicate content penalty, all have made it
abundantly clear that they do not have any desire to provide search
results that rehash the same content over and over. Actively avoid any
potential penalties by taking a proactive approach to building unique
content.

Clickz Takes on the Issue of Blog Credibility
Organic search results credibility and trustworthiness have always
been widely debated. When SEO (define) first became a hot tactic in
online marketing, search engines results became littered with spam --
doorway pages, link farms, you name it. Now that the search engines have
become smarter and their algorithms increasingly complex, they are much
better at weeding out spam.
But how do you define spam? Is it sites that provide no inherent
value (e.g., a page full of links or ads) or content that's potentially
invalid, unproved, or biased?
The answer to that question probably depends a lot on who you ask.
Clickz Questions Credibility of Blogs
Here is another article from a different source a few months ago:
Credibility online is becoming more and more of an issue. Anyone can
have a blog or post to a forum and anyone can edit wiki entries. Web
surfers are beginning to comprehend that just because it is in print
does not necessarily mean that it is true. In fact, in today's online
world, the collective truth might be the closest thing we can get to the
real truth. Peer policing and social bookmarking have become common in
the online world.
Human nature invariably prompts a level of trust;if it is written, it
must be true. We live in a generation where we expect authors, editors
and publishers that are qualified to write on various topics. What
qualifications are required to post a blog, write an online article, or
edit a wiki? Some web surfers may find the answer startling: None.
Expertise is no longer a prerequisite. Wikipedia is a popular online
reference, that frequently obtains top ranking in search engines as a
reference source. How many Wikipedia readers realize that Wikipedia can
be edited by anyone at anytime, regardless of their qualifications.

engines has made understanding search engines a necessity for those who
spend any amount of time online. The following search tips are standards
that will work in most of the major search engines.

Top Podcast Tips for a Great Sound
What defines a good podcast? Make no mistake -- there is a difference
between a good podcast and a not-so-good podcast. A high-caliber podcast
is much more than just decent content. The sound quality, and the way a
podcast is recorded, will impact the value of the podcast as well.
Podcast structure and pre-planning are also important; do not skimp on
the production, as it too can make or break a podcast.
